Crossing the Murray River on a ferry is a unique experience and one that should be on the list for your next visit!
Description
The Lyrup Ferry is one of twelve cable driven ferries operating on the Murray River in South Australia, alleviating the need for permanent structures to be built across the river. The ferries, complete with drivers, operate 24 hours a day, travelling from side to side taking walk on passengers, cars, caravans, trucks and buses with no cost to use.
The current Lyrup Ferry has been in operation since 2016 and is one of the newer steel hull ferries that can carry up to a 50 tonne capacity. This is a far cry from the original hand operated wooden ferry that Mr Charles Rowlands (the first lessee) began operating at the Lyrup site in March or April 1918.
Did you know that each ferry is individually named for one of the water birds of the river? The Lyrup Ferry is named the Cockatoo!
