Description
Mallee Estate is a family owned and operated boutique winery established by Peter and Eleni Markeas. The first vineyard was established in 1969 with three acres of Shiraz planted, which is used in part to make the Mallee Estate Shiraz.
There are three vineyards all at separate locations in Renmark and are the only supply of grapes for the winery. This is to take advantage of the different soil types and to grow better and more distinctive grapes for winemaking. All wines are made from estate grown grapes.
The winery has state of the art processing equipment from the de-stemmer/crusher to the tank press and from cross-flow filtration to the temperature controlled cellar.
All processes in the winery are done under the watchful eye of the winemaker, Jim Markeas and his brother Arthur, with all emphasis to preserve the quality of the fruit through to the bottle. This is apparent in the finished wines being of consistent and exceptional quality year after year.
Now Arthur and Jim are the second generation to lead Mallee Estate into its exciting future with expanding export markets in China, Hong Kong and the USA. Together, they’ve won a few prestigious awards such as Riverland Winery Of The Year in 2017 and at the New York International Wine Competition - double gold for the 2015 Temperanillo and the 2013 Reserve.
'Vine to Wine' tours are available at 11.30am from Wednesday to Sunday and are personally hosted by Jim (the Winemaker). The tour takes you from the vines, where he explains the various practices they use, up the 7m catwalk platform to enjoy the view over the vineyards and then he takes you through the process of crushing, blending and bottling to finish at the cellar door for tastings. Bookings are required with a cost of $15 per person and can include dips and pita with tastings for an extra $5 per person.
You are then tempted to stay for a meal at Eleni's Restaurant which is open for lunch everyday 12pm to 2.30pm and dinner Thursday to Saturday 5.30 to late.
